P5/P6
Plate Tectonics
We have been learning about how the earth’s crust is made up of moving plates. We used the Internet to find out the names of these plates.
Irregular Shape Perimeters
We have been learning how to calculate the perimeter of irregular 2D shapes by counting the squares and measuring with a ruler.
We have also been using given measurements to help us work out the missing measurements.
Dividing by 8
Some examples of the types of games we played to help us learn the divide by 8 tables and also apply this knowledge to other calculations.
Dorian is thinking carefully about how these past tense -ed verb word cards could possibly be grouped to reflect their spelling patterns. You are doing very well with this Dorian.
Well done to our recent star players in hockey! Making super progress Demir and Kirsten!
We explored a variety of ways to calculate the perimeter of various 2D shapes, including squares, rectangles, triangles, regular shapes and irregular shapes.
It was fun to develop our use of the different perimeter formulae along with our multiplying knowledge to help us find these perimeters more efficiently.
Find my Legs: The boys had fun playing this game to practise the x8 tables. They wrote multiples of 8 into the circles. They then rolled the dice. The number they rolled was multiplied by 8. If the answer was inside a circle they got to draw on one of the spider’s legs to join up to this circle.
The Calculator Game: Pupils practised the x8 tables by “typing” in the answer using their feet on the calculator buttons below them as the sums were shown on a loop.
Some games we recently have played in our Numeracy work on rounding
Pupils used a range of Active Maths game boards and counters to select numbers to round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
P5/6 have been working hard to make up their own PowerPoint about a topic of their choice, then presenting it to the rest of the class. Everyone has worked very hard on this and did a great job presenting their PowerPoint to their classmates, great job everyone!
We recently went to visit Parkanaur with Mrs Young’s class and met up with P5 and P7 from St John’s PS. We all had great fun out in the forest, learning all about woodland wellbeing.
A big well done to our recent accelerated prize winners, Katie, Cameron and Holly for reading 100,000 words and James for achieving 80% in 20 accelerated reader tests.
Some phonics activities with our spellings.
Pupils are completing spelling practice, sorting words by the number of syllables they have and arranging spelling words into alphabetical order.
Pupils are learning about verb tenses: past, present and future.
We learned about the language linked with these tenses and how to recognise them, such as by verb endings, use of auxiliary verbs and how irregular verbs change their spellings.
We explored different types of texts and the tense they are most likely to be written in.
Problem Solving with Weights
Pupils were given a range of familiar weights within 1 kg to choose from. They were only allowed to put 2 of these weight together at a time. They investigated to find out how many different weights they could make using these and recorded the possible combinations.
Some of our P6 pupils also used their thinking skills to position weights within the grid based on the written descriptions about how they should be placed.
Pupils did very well with planning how they would approach these tasks and thought carefully to complete these successfully. Well done all!
We have been learning about converting between weights shown in different forms.
For instance, 1/4 kg = 250g = 0.25 kg. This is three different ways of showing the same weight.
We changed amounts from grams into kg and g and vice versa.
We also explored weight scales where weights are shown at various intervals and practised reading these scales and marking on given weights.
We took part in a number of energetic games and fun activities to help us to learn our multiplying and dividing by 7 tables. The rainbow relay, when worked together in teams, was the best fun!
Some pupils in P5 visited the sweet shop. How many bags of 7 sweets can you fill with each jar of sweets?
Other pupils enjoyed playing this board game to practise dividing these numbers by 7. Great tables work everyone!
Victorian Day
Well done to everyone for coming to school in your Victorian style outfits. Everyone went to a great deal of effort to put their outfits together and certainly looked the part!
P5/6 had the opportunity to experience what life was like for a Victorian child who had to resort to living in Dungannon Workhouse. We were greeted by Mrs McKinly, the workhouse Matron. Pupils were registered as inmates and their records revealed the many ways in which they ended up in this situation. These included being evicted from their cottage, being orphaned and involvement in criminal activity to mention a few. Mrs McKinly told us about aspects of workhouse life such as clothing worn, daily routines, jobs children would have done, rules to be followed, punishments and foods children would eaten. We made gruel and saw the small amount of food children had to survive on. They must have been so hungry! It was very interesting!
Pupils also tried writing with ink pens. It was difficult to avoid getting the ink on your hands and on your page. You had to work quite slowly. However, taking your time allowed everyone to form neat and tidy letters. Well done!
The porridge we tried for snack was very tasty and healthy to eat!
Outside at playtime, P5/6 had the opportunity to try a range of Victorian yard games. Pupils played marbles, German jumps, hop scotch, rolling the hoop, walking on stilts, catching the flying circle, hand clapping games and skipping. It was brilliant fun getting to play these games together.
Pupils also had the opportunity to develop their knowledge of Victorian textile skills. They used a range of wools to complete some weaving on a simple weaving loom. The children came onto this really well and demonstrated great focus to weave successfully.
“ Over, under, over under! “ They have produced some beautiful pieces of weaving. Well done everyone!
We enjoyed singing some traditional songs like ‘ Tell Me Ma ‘ .
A massive thankyou to Katie, who kindly brought in this Victorian child’s boot to show us. It was found in a relative’s garden when digging. What a fascinating find Katie! It was really interesting for us all to see this beautiful boot.
Grouping different types of triangles based on their properties.
New Year Fireworks Problem Solving
Pupils were given three firework colours to create their New Year’s Eve display with. They could include 1, 2 or all 3 of the colours. How many different possible colour combinations can you create?
Pupils shaded to create and record their combinations.
It’s 2025! Happy New Year Everyone!
Hockey success for star players: Katie, Dorian and Rhys!
Really well done everyone!

We made hot chocolate and Christmas treats. Delicious!
Decorating our Christmas Classroom.
Beautiful Christmas Tree Paintings
We made paper maché snowmen heads.
We used Macrome cord to create these beautiful Christmas angel decorations. Well done everyone!
Very well done to the KS2 Christmas Choir who went carol singing at Tesco’s in Portadown and the Oaks in Dungannon. Their singing was thoroughly enjoyed by shoppers and created a lovely Christmas atmosphere. This was followed by a very well deserved trip to McDonalds where pupils enjoyed some lunch and ice-cream together.
Non-uniform day to raise money for PeacePlayers
Well done Holly, who received a great mark and remarks from the adjudicator at Banbridge Speech and Drama Festival, performing a duologue at the festival for the first time.
We joined Mrs Young’s class and P5 and P7 from St John’s PS to head to Parkanaur for a trip all about forest wellbeing. We all enjoyed orienteering in the forest and team building activities.
Well done to Oliver and Anna who received a certificate and prize for reading 100,000 words in Accelerated Reader

We all recently enjoyed our shared education Healthy Kidz session down in the Moy Presbyterian church hall with P5 from St John’s
Traditional Irish Cottage Paintings based on the work of Irish Artist, Paul Henry.
We studied patchwork patterns and created our own whole class patchwork quilt.
Traditional Cottages
As part of our learning about the Irish Potato Famine, we examined traditional cottage designs and identified their common features.
Exploring Powerful Verbs
We sorted to create groups of interested verbs to link with our Dr Bernardo text.
We thought about how verbs with a similar meaning could be ordered to show their strength. Some verbs are more powerful, in terms of the meaning they create, than others.
Some examples of our learning carried out about types of angles and use of protractors.
Ordering Angles
P5 worked together to order these angles by their size to show the progression of smallest to biggest.
P6 pupils enjoyed using this Active Maths Gameboard to identify and name the different types of angles.
We learned about general homophone words. They sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings. We found the homophone words which matched our meanings cards. Then we found the matching pairs of these examples and made a set.
We all went on a ‘Welly Walk Adventure’ around our school grounds and forest area. It was fun to go exploring out in the fresh air and play games in our forest. The Popcorn game and Thirteen are two of our favourites.
Types of Angles
We learned about the names and properties of the different types of angles. We looked for examples of angles in our surroundings and were able to form examples of these angles using our angle makers. We used art straws to make an angles poster and sorted angles we were given to create groups. A great job on this learning everyone! Well done!
The Amazing Journey
KS2 were joined today by the brilliant team from The Amazing Journey. We enjoyed meeting the interesting characters from bible times and hearing their wonderful stories. It was great fun to dress up in the colourful costumes and we enjoyed getting to sample some of the foods typical of this time. The olives and pineapple were delicious!
Forest Homophones
We had fun in our forest area where we were learning about homophone words.
We searched the forest floor for matching homophone word leaves to make a pair. We searched for homophones in our Literacy text and recorded these along with other matching homophone words. We found so many!
Using our text words, we formed matching homophone word groups by hanging word cards beside these examples already displayed on our ‘homophones tree’. It was interesting to think about these word groups and talk about their different spellings and meanings. Fantastic working on this activity everyone!
Thank you to Gordon Stewart from Dungannon Fire Station, who came out to give a Fire Safety talk
Dress up day fun
Movie day treats
S’mores and campfire story fun
Pupils did a great job of making their own chocolate apples for Halloween
Halloween Fireworks in Oil Pastel
Well done Holly and Katie, who were our class winners of the Parent Support Group colouring competition
Well done James, who received an accelerated reader certificate and prize for reading 100,000 words
Forest Mandala Patterns
To celebrate the joys of autumn, we used leaves from the autumn forest floor to create these interesting repeat mandala patterns. The range of colours, shapes and textures you can see is just amazing! Beautiful work everyone!
The Autumn Hedgerow
We used drawing pencils to sketch some items from the autumn hedgerow. We took time to really look at the details and tried to capture these shapes. Super drawings everyone!
P6 pupils used the x4 tables to learn about the Numeracy concepts of: factors, multiples and finding the product.
In the same way as the colours blue and yellow mix to make green, the numbers on these blue and yellow circles (factors) multiply together to make these green multiples of 4 ( the product ).
We recorded factors for various numbers and notices how some numbers have more factors than others.
Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs
Following our learning in the forest about different types of words, we paired up and used stickers to label these types of words within sentences strips taken from our Literacy text.
As part of our Forest Schools Learning, we had brilliant fun using our forest area to learn about types of words which make up our speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. We were able to use our surroundings to generate so many great examples of interesting language. Well done everyone!
Peaceplayers weeks 3 and 4 with St John’s PS P5 class, at the Torrent Complex in Donaghmore
Peaceplayers weeks 1 and 2 with St John’s PS P5 class, at the Torrent Complex in Donaghmore
We worked together to make fractions cards to show the different ways we can represent a fraction
Parallel,Perpendicular and Intersecting Lines
P6 pupils have been learning about different types of lines.
We also explored 2D shapes which include these types of lines within their edges.
Maud from Peaceplayers came out to see us to introduce us to the Peaceplayers programme
Some Numeracy games we have played together
We have been learning about putting word lists into alphabetical order at various levels.
Oliver enjoys showing us how he can play his cornet in class. He is coming on so well! Go Oliver!
We enjoy using a variety of fun numeracy materials and game boards to develop our understanding of the mental maths concepts.
We learned about the 2D shape names and examined their properties. It was fun working in pairs to sort and display the 2D shapes based on the properties indicated at the top of the various sorting diagrams.
Some of the activities that we completed to learn about when capital letters should be used in our writing. We sorted word cards taken from our Literacy text to show those that do / do not need a capital and sorted general word cards into categories within the grid. In groups, we played the capitals categories game where we had to suggest examples of words belonging to that category which need a capital letter. For example, seas, lakes and rivers : Atlantic Ocean.
At Moy Regional, we value the voice of our children and take children’s mental health and well-being very seriously! Pupils have access to a variety of tools which they can use to help them think about and articulate how they are feeling and have knowledge of strategies to help them manage their emotions.
